El Zopilote Hostel and Permaculture Farm is a unique backpackers' hostel and permaculture farm that also grows mushrooms. We offer a range of accommodations including private huts, rooms, dorms, camping areas, and hammocks. Amenities include free yoga, permaculture and mushroom courses, cacao ceremonies, volcano tours, massages, workshops, and more. Our farm-to-table vegetarian and vegan restaurant offers a few meat options daily. Tuesdays and Saturdays feature our popular Pizza Night with fire shows, dancing, natural cocktails, and fun. On Thursdays, we host Italian Night with lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, and tiramisu.
Located on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua, in the Santa Cruz/Madronal area on the jungle slopes of Volcano Maderas, we’re just 1 km before Balgue. The hostel is near top attractions like Volcano Maderas, Volcano Concepcion, and Playa Santa Cruz. The farm, a short 4-minute hike from the main road, provides a tranquil retreat.
All accommodations are designed to blend into the natural setting and promote environmental awareness. Options cater to a variety of budgets and preferences, with basic yet cozy rooms featuring shared compost toilets and showers. Only the Mariposa Bungalow offers more luxury with a private bathroom (compost toilet). Some dorms and rooms are near the reception, while others are more secluded and thus priced lower. Please keep this in mind when booking.
The hillside location provides a refreshing breeze, keeping rooms cool without the need for fans or air conditioning. We operate entirely on solar energy, use odorless compost toilets, and recycle all waste.
Guests are advised to bring a flashlight for navigating minimally lit paths at night, as only the huts are illuminated to maintain the natural environment.
